Will Cayden Primeau be traded soon? The 24-year-old goaltender might request a trade if the situation remains unchanged

It's no secret to anyone anymore; the organization currently finds itself in a rather complex situation with four goaltenders who have NHL contracts for the 2023-2024 season. Although Casey DeSmith might be traded soon, Cayden Primeau will apparently have to go through waivers to join the Laval Rocket.

A situation that certainly must not please the young 24-year-old goaltender, who was once considered a top prospect and potentially the organization's future goalie. However, in his last four seasons, Primeau never received real confidence from the management, playing only 21 games in the NHL.

Moreover, in a recent column in the Journal de Montréal, the Canadiens' former goaltender, Richard Sévigny, mentioned that this internal competition leading up to training camp could be unhealthy for the team's goaltenders, creating additional pressure.

"It can't work. There's no upside. It creates unhealthy internal competition. Playing for the Canadiens is already a lot of pressure. Now, it's even worse. You can't afford to lose, or the other will take your place."

"Someone always gets the short end of the stick in this situation. Even if you have the best guys in the world, it's sure not to work. No goaltender will be content being third." - Richard Sévigny

He even suggests that if the situation doesn't change, Cayden Primeau might want to request a trade to get a better opportunity with a new team. After all, there are currently three goaltenders ahead of him in the Canadiens' hierarchy, significantly reducing his chances of starting games in the NHL this season.

"If there are three goalies in Montreal and he's in Laval, I'm convinced he'll want to leave. At least, if I were in his shoes, that's what I'd do. Because with three goalies ahead of him, he'll never get other chances." - Richard Sévigny

One could totally understand him!

Despite good performances in the AHL, the Michigan native goaltender never got the chance to prove himself at the higher level. Could he get fed up and ask for a trade? It's a very likely possibility and it will be a case to watch closely in the coming weeks.
