Since his acquisition by Kent Hughes, whispers have intensified about a possible chaperone for Patrik Laine. We hadn't mentioned it before, but there were rumors that the new Finnish forward for the Canadiens might have «someone in charge of following him» almost at all times to better support and guide him when needed.
Journalist Luc Gélinas has set the record straight.
On BPM Sports earlier today, Gélinas stated the following:
The message is quite clear. At the same time, a player who had to enter the NHL's player assistance program might benefit from having an insurance policy like a nanny.
For some players, it could have made a big difference in their careers. It's a safe bet that some young players in the Montreal organization have probably used this kind of protective and supportive service over the years.
If Patrik Laine has taken control of his life, this help won't be necessary. With his wife by his side and a city as pleasant as Montreal, I think it will be easier to live in than Winnipeg and Columbus, two cities not really known for an exciting life.
Patrik Laine leads a quiet life with his fiancée, has worked very hard on himself over the past year, and simply wants to come here to play hockey and give his best on and off the ice.
Nevertheless, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton need to be attentive to the Finnish player. If he makes the request, it's obvious he'll have a companion if needed.
After all, the guy is entitled to a private life and a life outside of hockey.
Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes trust in Patrik Laine's rehabilitation process, and the best way to express it is by offering him what he wants. If the request comes from him, his wish will be granted. If he wants nothing to do with a nanny, they'll offer him peace and quiet.
