Huge tragedy for Patrik Laine: We now better understand his struggles in recent years
How can such a talented player hit rock bottom as quickly as Patrik Laine did? Luc Gélinas from RDS gave us the answer.
The young Finn was only 22 years old when his father passed away, an unimaginable shock for him.
"Laine, there's something you need to understand... I wouldn't be surprised if he scores 40 goals this year if he stays healthy and plays 75-82 games.
You know, at 22 years old, his father passed away, and he was very close to his father. His father was with him most of the time in America... And he didn't pass away due to illness; it was instantaneous, completely unexpected.
For Laine, it was a devastating blow... For young Laine, it was a brutal shock to experience something like this at just 22 years old."
- Luc Gélinas
We often think of players as goal-scoring machines, but they are human beings first and foremost, and Patrik Laine has shown tremendous courage.
Losing a parent is never easy, especially when you're close and they are very present in your life.
But when you're still very young and dependent on them, it can be an insurmountable tragedy for some, and Patrik Laine is among those who have faced this.
We genuinely hope that Luc Gélinas is right and that Laine can, a few years later, score around 40 goals in a season.
But above all, we hope he feels at home in Montreal, and the fans will play a key role in that, especially at the Bell Centre.
