We've been focused on Trevor Zegras and Martin Necas, but looking at the past two years, Kent Hughes has made unexpected acquisitions with Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook.
Simon Boisvert recently suggested an interesting idea that many fans might like because the cost would be relatively low: acquiring Peyton Krebs from Buffalo.
Selected in the first round, 17th overall by the Golden Knights in 2019, Krebs was part of the massive trade sending Jack Eichel to Vegas.
Despite his modest 17 points in 80 games, Simon Boisvert believes Krebs has untapped offensive potential. The fact that Buffalo already has many forwards doesn't help him secure a top-6 spot.
Boisvert suggests offering a second-round pick, the 56th overall, for Krebs. If such an offer were on the table, I think Kent Hughes would jump at the opportunity.
We know Hughes likes to acquire former first-round picks, and Krebs was selected right after Cole Caufield and before Alex Newhook.
A change of scenery could do him a lot of good, but I doubt the Sabres would let him go for a second-round pick.
Nonetheless, it's a very intriguing proposal, and since Kent Hughes has a knack for surprising us, it could happen.
