On July 1st, Kent Hughes signed a substantial eight-year contract with Juraj Slafkovsky, averaging $7.6 million per year.

Despite having just over a hundred NHL games under his belt, this contract is already seen as a bargain, as Slafkovsky continues to improve and remains driven to win in Montreal.

Hughes on the verge of signing another big contract?

The next player on the list is defenseman Kaiden Guhle. During the press conference following Slafkovsky's signing, the GM clearly mentioned this.

"Kent Hughes stated that contract discussions with Kaiden Guhle have begun but are 'less advanced than with Slafkovsky.' The goal is still to reach an agreement with him this summer, "otherwise it will wait like with Cole," said the GM."

It's worth noting that Cole Caufield waited until June of his final contract year before signing his deal, with just a month left on his entry-level contract.

Guhle's entry-level contract expires in a year, but Hughes seems eager to settle the matter beforehand.

Guhle is an excellent defenseman and a crucial player for the Canadiens. However, he is relatively injury-prone and has already suffered several concussions.

Time will tell what will happen with him and his contract, but it seems that if the GM waits longer, it might cost more.
