Three defensemen are now tied to the Canadiens, and the signings are complete. Hughes can now focus on the trade market.
It's well known that the Canadiens have a significant surplus of defensemen, and the GM is trying by all means to trade one or more of them to bring in a forward with top-6 potential.
According to The Hockey Writers, that defenseman could well be Arber Xhekaj. Of course, other teams are aware of the Canadiens' depth at this position, so they are aiming high and are not looking to settle for a Justin Barron or a Jordan Harris.
Personally, I believe Xhekaj will not be traded in the short term. He has only signed for two years, but a longer and more lucrative extension will come to him if he continues to progress.
Moreover, the organization held a press conference to highlight his new deal, which is far from common. Justin Barron, who is not a fan favorite and is available on the market, did not receive the same treatment despite signing a few hours later.
Recall that Hughes previously turned down an offer from Daniel Brière and the Philadelphia Flyers for a top-6 forward in exchange for Arber. However, with this new, very advantageous contract for a GM, The Hockey Writers believes Xhekaj becomes even more interesting, and Brière will continue to call Hughes.
Once again, I disagree with these statements. Xhekaj is just starting to come into his own. We saw the progression he made before his injury last year. He is a diamond in the rough for the Canadiens.
If he is ever traded, it will be for a very substantial return and only when the organization no longer needs him, which is not likely to happen anytime soon.
