Cole Caufield is getting solidly tackled by Serge Savard
Cole Caufield had a solid 2023-24 season, with 65 points including 28 goals. It was his first full season without injuries, which is promising.
Despite improvements in his all-around game, his goal-scoring fell short of expectations, as he was expected to be the next 40-goal scorer for the team.
Serge Savard, the former Canadiens star and GM, believes Cole didn't impress last year and needs to find ways to stand out more.
«There was one guy who excited me a lot two years ago, but it was a bit less so this year. When he [Cole Caufield] first arrived with the Canadiens, I saw him as very dangerous every time he touched the puck, but I found him less dangerous last season. A guy like Caufield needs to really take advantage of the power play.» - Serge Savard
Such comments were frequent throughout the season. Cole is a natural scorer but went through long stretches without goals and was quite subdued on the power play.
In my opinion, there's no need to panic just yet. Cole had a good overall season and is indeed better at both ends of the ice.
When all aspects of his game come together, he will be very dangerous and less predictable on the ice. He's only 23, after all!
Nevertheless, Serge Savard is enthusiastic about the Canadiens and their future. He'd like to see the team bulk up a bit but is excited about players like Juraj Slafkovsky, who aligns with this vision.
