Departure of a young player from the Habs: Jeff Gorton provides major details
Last week, we learned from Jeff Gorton that a young player was leaving the Canadiens organization and would not receive an offer.
Indeed, Jesse Ylonen did not receive a qualifying offer from the Habs, but not for the reasons we thought.
It's easy to say that the Canadiens no longer wanted him, but it was rather a mutual decision. Ylonen did not receive an offer by mutual agreement with the organization.
"Gorton later clarified this was more of a mutual parting of ways and there's a chance Ylönen could be back as a UFA after he tests the waters." - Arpon Basu, The Athletic
So the Canadiens hadn't given up on Ylonen; they wanted to give him a chance to prove himself elsewhere.
With his trade value very low, Ylonen would have had a diminished role with the Canadiens, whereas now he has the opportunity for a fresh start.
He has signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he will have the chance to show that he can play in the NHL night after night. Best of luck to him!
