Dismissal for the Montreal Canadiens: What was long demanded for Alex Burrows, but he is now proving his worth
Since 2021, Alex Burrows has been leading the Canadiens' power play, and it's safe to say he was on the hot seat most of the time.
Firstly, being part of the old administration alongside Dominique Ducharme, Martin St-Louis, or Kent Hughes could have brought in someone else, but they didn't.
Then, struggles continued for almost two years. Two years is a long time to see improvement in such a crucial aspect as the power play.
The Canadiens ranked second to last in the entire NHL with the man advantage during this time, but that's now in the past. Those who loudly demanded Burrows' departure are now silent.
"Eighth-best in the NHL since Dec. 13, operating at close to 25% and appearing dangerous every time it hits the ice. An important development for the future, and it only stands to get better with the players that are coming." - Eric Engels
The difference is clear. The power play is dangerous almost every time they're on the ice, even after the departure of such an important member as Sean Monahan. The team and the coaches are growing together, and it's a great example.
"The Canadiens finally have a power play unit to be feared. It's been years since we could say that, but the sample size is now large enough to say it definitively. The Habs have a dangerous power play."
At least a dangerous first unit. Finding themselves in the top third of the League in the midst of reconstruction is becoming solid. Other teams won't want to take penalties against the Canadiens now because the team is making them pay the price.
Let's acknowledge the work of Burrows, who, despite insults and rumors, continued to believe in his plan and elevated the power play.
