Finished for Patrik Laine: we have details of the negotiations that led to his acquisition
It is officially over for Patrik Laine with the Columbus Blue Jackets, and he has now been a member of the Montreal Canadiens for a few weeks.
He seems very happy to have joined the Canadiens, and all hopes are allowed. Even renowned insider Elliotte Friedman is very excited about what's coming with the CH.
"I love the future of the Montreal Canadiens."
- Elliotte Friedman
Speaking of Friedman, he revealed information about the negotiations between the Blue Jackets and their general manager Don Waddell during the Patrik Laine trade.
The Minnesota Wild were very interested, and all indications suggest that the team was not on the Finnish player's list of undesirable teams. In the end, Kent Hughes won out for a specific reason.
"I believe that Minnesota was very interested in Patrik Laine. It didn't happen, but I still believe that the Wild was very interested in him."
- Elliotte Friedman
The reason is quite simple, as due to the buyouts of Ryan Suter and Zach Parise, the Wild are penalized by more than 14 million dollars this season and have less than 1 million in cap space.
The Blue Jackets would have had to retain a significant portion of Laine's salary, which is not a situation favored by Don Waddell, and one can understand why.
Kent Hughes thus had the fortunate hand because he was able to absorb the entirety of Patrik Laine's contract.
