It is now confirmed for David Reinbacher and Daniel Brière
At the 2023 NHL Draft, particularly concerning the Canadiens, there were many rumors surrounding the 5th overall pick, David Reinbacher.
The draft took place in Nashville, and the general manager of the host team, Barry Trotz, wanted to make a splash, but no trade ultimately occurred.
There were many rumors that the Predators offered goaltender Yaroslav Askarov to the Canadiens, along with their first-round pick, aiming to select Reinbacher, but their intentions were never 100% confirmed.
However, the Flyers and Daniel Brière really wanted the defenseman, and that is now confirmed.
Eric Engels, the journalist covering the Canadiens for Sportsnet, mentioned that the Austrian was ahead of Matvei Michkov on their list, and they tried to acquire the Canadiens' pick but to no avail.
"I know that a lot of teams were interested in the fifth pick that the Canadiens held last year. In fact, a number of teams wanted to acquire that pick to select David Reinbacher.
This also includes the team [Philadelphia Flyers] - from what I've been able to gather and talking to several sources within the league afterward - that ended up choosing Matvei Michkov. They were one of the teams really interested in getting David Reinbacher." - Eric Engels
This means that Daniel Brière was indeed hoping to acquire the defenseman, but he wasn't alone.
The Canadiens clearly saw something in selecting Reinbacher, and the young player has something special that we'll surely discover.
If so many teams wanted him and if Kent Hughes refused so many enticing offers to select him, it's not just for his good looks.
We'll see in the coming years.
