Ivan Demidov elsewhere than in Montreal: big statement from Kent Hughes
With the 5th overall pick in the last draft, Kent Hughes, and the Canadiens selected Ivan Demidov, a unanimous choice.
Indeed, it was later revealed that he was the most desired pick by the management. When they saw that he was still available at the 5th spot, the excitement was palpable.
An excerpt from the Canadiens' draft documentary was released, showing Kent Hughes clearly asking if they should trade the 5th overall pick.
The rest of the sequence isn't shown, but it's likely that if Ivan Demidov hadn't been available, a trade might have been on the table.
Trevor Zegras was strongly linked to the Canadiens during the draft, with Logan Mailloux involved. I'm not sure if it's related, but it certainly sparked a lot of discussions.
Nonetheless, it's clear that the organization had a Plan B. The goal was to acquire a young, high-quality offensive forward this summer, and if Ivan Demidov hadn't been available, it would have made sense for Kent Hughes to turn to Trevor Zegras.
