It has been said for a while now: Kent Hughes will sooner or later have to trade one or more defensemen to make room for prospects and to improve the team's offense.

We know that the GM would greatly like to evaluate all the prospects he has on hand, but the NHL's maximum of 50 contracts plays against him. It will be impossible for him to have all these players under contract and available at the same time.

According to The Hockey News journalist Jacob Stoller, a prime candidate has been chosen by the GM for a trade.

"Hearing the Montreal Canadiens are shopping Jordan Harris ahead of the deadline.

Harris is a 23-year-old LHD who skates well & has 1 more year left on his deal ($1.4M). MTL's overflow of young D has made him expendable." - Jacob Stoller, THN

Harris is a solid defenseman and an even better person, but his ceiling is apparently not much higher than what we currently see. He is reliable but not extraordinary in any aspect.

He will have a fine NHL career as a third-pair defenseman, but in Montreal, he is no longer part of the plans, for a good reason.

It will be interesting to see what his value is on the trade market, given that he was originally a third-round pick. Personally, I don't expect a return much better than his draft position, but if Kent Hughes can add depth to the offense, it's a win for the Canadiens.
