Major acquisition by the Canadian soon? Elliotte Friedman has news
Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes has always kept his guiding principle: improve his roster, by adding talented and promising players, but without harming the future of the club.
The arrival of Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook are evidence of this strategy. Recently, he also got his hands on Patrik Laine, who should make a significant impact upon his return.
However, the start of the season has revealed obvious gaps within the team.
In the last few hours, journalist Frank Seravalli indicated that Kent Hughes had contacted other NHL teams in order to find a right-handed defenseman for the top-4.
This need in defense has become a priority, given the team's uneven performances AND the recent injuries to Justin Barron and Kaiden Guhle.
Elliotte Friedman also shared information yesterday according to which the Canadiens are looking for a forward with character.
"Friedman, in Headlines, says the Canadiens are not only looking for help on defense, they're also looking for a forward with bite, but they won't make a trade that interferes with their long-term plan."
This type of player could provide the necessary fighting spirit to galvanize the team. Friedman made it clear that Hughes won't commit to a deal that would hurt the club's long-term plans, so it has to pay off in the long run, like the trades I listed above.
As speculation continues, hockey fans are wondering if these efforts to strengthen the team will pay off.
The Canadiens management seems committed to building a team that will be competitive, while respecting the rebuilding process that is underway.
