Major development regarding David Savard: Kent Hughes has made his decision
The trade deadline ends today, and unless there's a surprise, Kent Hughes will once again have missed the boat this year. Perhaps a player like Tanner Pearson could leave for a small return, but that should be about it. Jake Allen has a hefty contract, and David Savard holds too much value for the organization.
Indeed, the Canadiens' GM won't let the defenseman go unless he gets a first-round pick, maybe even more. According to Pierre LeBrun, he is comfortable waiting until next year to get his price.
"Lebrun on Overdrive says the Habs are getting a lot of calls on Savard but they're not ready to give Hughes' price.
He adds Hughes can wait with Savard having term.
*My interpretation of that is Hughes wants a 1st and believes one day he will get it and he can wait to get it." - Brian Wilde
It's clear that Kent Hughes has the upper hand in waiting. Savard is playing solid hockey, and unless there's a surprise, he'll be just as effective next year. Moreover, he is an important mentor for the team's young defensemen.
I personally believe that Hughes wants more than a first-round pick for Savard and isn't trading him because he's not receiving offers he absolutely cannot refuse.
Next year, on the eve of the end of his contract, the reality will be different. We're not immune to a surprise, but the current feeling is that Sean Monahan will be the only significant player to have left the ship a month ago.
