Major: The Stars help the Canadiens on the trade market

Kent Hughes and the Canadiens have a very promising crop of young defensemen, as well as some very good veterans.

Indeed, David Savard and Michael Matheson play crucial roles in mentoring the young players while delivering strong performances. For Matheson, it was the best season of his career.

David Savard was involved in several trade rumors before the deadline, but Kent Hughes ultimately decided to keep him, and this could prove to be very rewarding.

The defenseman has qualities similar to Chris Tanev, who is currently playing a crucial role with the Dallas Stars. They have reached the Western Conference Finals.

"And when we look at what the defenseman (Chris Tanev) has done in the first two rounds, we see that at 5-on-5, he completely shut down the best opposing players, whether it's Jack Eichel in Vegas or Nathan MacKinnon in Colorado. The Stars scored six goals and conceded only one when Tanev was on the ice against these two guys at 5-on-5, and this, in nearly 120 minutes of play." - Félix Forget

It is clear that the defenseman is solid, and David Savard is very similar to him. Moreover, if Kent Hughes didn't get his price this year, he might well get it next year, or even this summer.

It is currently a trend in the NHL to have a reliable defenseman who blocks a lot of shots like Savard. Similar to Matthias Ekholm and Chris Tanev.

It will be interesting to see what Kent Hughes can obtain, but with Tanev's performances so far, the Canadiens' GM has strong arguments to get a significant return.
