After a more than disappointing season, many fans secretly hope that general manager Kent Hughes can trade the Canadiens forward Josh Anderson.

According to recent information, there have been some developments.

Although his physical presence and skating speed could still benefit the Canadiens, his contract is a burden on the organization, especially knowing he is signed with the team until 2027 with an average salary of $5.5 million. Ouch!

Even though he seems to be a good guy and a well-liked teammate in the locker room, the organization needs to try to move on from him. It is unlikely that Josh Anderson will be able to break into the top-six in 2024-2025, and in the following years, it will be even worse. Paying a third or even fourth-line player $5.5 million makes it very difficult to build a championship-contending team.

Besides his salary, his playing style doesn't align with Martin St-Louis's system. Described as a power forward who enjoys playing a north-south style, Josh Anderson has never been impressive in the playoffs, so he's not the type of player who helps his team advance a round or two in the series.

Josh Anderson trade: The Hockey News has an update

With a robust team like several formations, including the Carolina Hurricanes, a team that lost some good offensive pieces this summer, he could really stand out and be more effective in a market that suits him better. The hitch is that the Hurricanes don't have much salary cap space. This is the reason for the departure of several stars and the ongoing Martin Necas contract situation.

If Anderson can use his speed, finish his checks, and drive to the net, it would be a much better fit.

According to The Hockey News (THN), Anderson could indeed be the next player traded by Kent Hughes.

"The days of him scoring at least 20 goals a year seem to be over, and his age makes him replaceable in a way most of the young Canadiens are not."

Several NHL executives believe the fit with the Canadiens is not good. His salary and the length of his contract are also burdens.

"If it means opening a spot on the roster for a promising young player, the Canadiens should do what they can to trade him. Anderson simply doesn't seem to be a good fit for the Canadiens at this stage of his career."

- The Hockey News

With Martin St-Louis trying to build a system based on intelligence and team play, Anderson seems a bit lost.

Would you be willing to trade Anderson even if it means retaining some salary in the transaction?

"Montreal might have to retain part of his salary to entice a team to take him on in a trade."

- THN

If Kent Hughes is serious about acquiring a player who can play in his top-six, Josh Anderson could be traded in exchange for a bad contract like Patrik Laine's. After all, Josh Anderson had some success in Columbus.
