One-sided trade Between the Canadiens and the Flames: bad news

In August 2022, the Canadiens announced that Kent Hughes had completed a transaction for Sean Monahan and a conditional first-round pick, in exchange for future considerations.

Now, knowing everything that Monahan has brought to the Canadiens, his acquisition has been a steal, even without including the first-round pick in 2025.

The only issue is that there were around 20 conditions attached to this pick. It's a bit exaggerated, but it's said to be one of the most complex transactions to follow in history due to these conditions.

Anyway, the Flames' first-round pick in 2025 is protected within the top 10. With Jacob Markstrom leaving, I fear the Flames may finish near the bottom of the standings next year.

"Watch for how this deal plays out in terms of does it make Calgary more likely to finish bottom 10 or not.

If this is for prospects, the likelihood increases the Habs get Florida's first rounder." - Brian Wilde

Obviously, if the Flames have a top 10 pick next summer, the Canadiens will acquire the Panthers' first-round pick.

Florida reached the Stanley Cup Final in the last two seasons and has a formidable team. It shouldn't be much different next year.

Therefore, Kent Hughes will have to settle for a late first-round pick, which is less appealing. It's far from the end of the world, but it's far from excellent.
