It's also the last Cup won by a Canadian team, which is quite incredible. 31 years without a Cup in the country, during almost the entire duration of Bettman's tenure, is a very long time and raises many questions.
There are many controversies and conspiracies surrounding Bettman, but to be fair, he has done a lot for the financial health of the NHL.
The major issue is that he has made too many mistakes, particularly with the Arizona Coyotes, and he is no longer the right person for the job. It requires a leader who can adapt to a younger audience with new ideas, which Bettman is not able to do.
We obviously expect a leader like Gary Bettman to earn a good salary, but the figures that have come out are downright surreal.
It is clear that the commissioner goes to great lengths to keep this information hidden, but according to journalist Ian Thomas, Bettman earned $9.6 million during the 2013-14 season alone, and $8.8 million the previous season. He also earned $8 million in 2011-12, showing an annual increase of $800,000.
Bettman is thus undoubtedly the highest-paid person in NHL history. He is also the highest-paid individual each season, surpassing even the highest-paid player.
Given all this, we have to question whether he is still the right person for the job and if the NHL's executives will continue to pay him so much despite his clear lack of vision.
Just the fact that, in the same week, there was Game 7 of the Stanley Cup, the individual awards ceremony, the draft, and the opening of free agency demonstrates that the vision is deficient.
These are important events that clearly lacked visibility due to the very short spacing between each.
