The Canadiens may have a promising young core, but they also have several bad contracts that still have several years left, like those of Josh Anderson and Brendan Gallagher.

The two forwards are earning 5.5 million and 6.5 million respectively for another three years, which is detrimental to the team's salary cap.

The situation is quite striking, as Kent Hughes had no room to sign free agents on July 1st. The GM could have competed with other offers if not for these bad contracts.

A buyout for Anderson and Gallagher? Jeff Gorton makes a decision

According to what the Canadiens' vice president of hockey operations reported, everyone will be in their positions next season. He couldn't have been clearer.

"Jeff Gorton says the team are not planning on buying any player out and will extend qualifying offers to RFAs Arber Xhekaj and Justin Barron. Jesse Ylönen will not receive a QA. Mattias Norlinder is the team's other RFA but Gorton wasn't specifically asked about him." - Jeff Gorton, via Priyanta Emrith

Brendan Gallagher, despite being overpaid, remains useful on the third line. He scored 16 goals and finished the season strongly, contributing impeccable work ethic and significant leadership.

Josh Anderson struggled throughout the season, except for a month when he won the Molson Cup. He will need to redeem himself from his poor season, unless he's traded before then.
