The new Matvei Michkov of Canadiens fans has been identified
It's not easy to please everyone, especially in Montreal. Kent Hughes was under pressure to draft Matvei Michkov last year, but he chose to go with David Reinbacher instead.
The future will tell us if the GM made the right decision, but one thing is for sure, this scenario repeats itself every year. In 2022, it was Shane Wright, and so on.
In 2024, the Habs will once again have a top 7 pick, and fans have made their choice. They're talking about Cayden Lindstrom. The excellent Marc-Olivier Beaudoin conducted a survey that was answered by 6000 people.
56% of respondents want Lindstrom with the Canadiens, while 25% want Tij Iginla, the son of Jarome. We know that Kent Hughes and his team have met with Tij several times, which suggests he could be their choice.
"You're the GM of the Habs and you have the 5th pick in the draft.
The selections 1-4 are Celebrini, Demidov, Levshunov, and Dickinson.
Do you go for Lindstrom despite the somewhat concerning injury history?
Or Iginla even though the natural talent is slightly lower?
Or Catton and his skills?" - Marc-Olivier Beaudoin
Lindstrom has the physique and talent for a top 5 pick, but his injury history is very concerning. However, he remains the best available player in Beaudoin's scenario.
"It's undeniable, Cayden Lindstrom remains the choice of the majority of Habs fans if he's available at their pick.
Tij Iginla has gained a lot of ground in +-1 month though! And if he shows up at the U18 tournament, it could change the game again!" - Marc-Olivier Beaudoin
If Hughes decides to select Iginla and Lindstrom is still available, expect some grumbling from the fans. I must admit that I myself have a preference for Lindstrom.
