With the selections of Ivan Demidov and Michael Hage, the outlook for the offense has changed dramatically. The prospect pool is much stronger across all positions.
Adding Jacob Fowler in goal and the promising young defensemen like Lane Hutson and Logan Mailloux, the Canadiens will have a very solid team in a few years.
What's problematic right now are the bad contracts handed out by Marc Bergevin. Brendan Gallagher, Josh Anderson, and Christian Dvorak are particularly burdensome, especially in the cases of Gallagher and Anderson.
Dvorak will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season, whereas Gallagher and Anderson still have three years left on their contracts at $6.5 million and $5.5 million per year, respectively.
Hughes might be lucky enough to trade Anderson's contract, as his style of play would fit well in Anaheim.
Why Anaheim? Because they haven't signed any free agents and are $8.8 million below the salary cap floor. They need to add salary, and quickly.
This prompted an online suggestion to trade, or almost give away, Josh Anderson to Anaheim, as his north-south style and speed would be a good fit for the Ducks.
It makes sense, but it also has to work for Kent Hughes. This situation also sheds light on why the Ducks are struggling to trade Trevor Zegras.
Not only does Verbeek want a significant return for the forward, but he also needs to acquire salary to meet the cap floor. Trading Zegras would hinder this goal.
