In my opinion, the Devils' forward is less productive than Patrik Laine and will always be. The Canadiens' new forward is flirting with a point per game, which is far from ordinary.
Here's a trade proposal that makes you think:
Considering Dawson Mercer accumulated 33 points in 82 games last year, it seems like a steep price.
Patrik Laine, on the other hand, was acquired along with a 2nd round pick for Jordan Harris, who is a 3rd pair defender, at best 2nd pair, and was drafted in the 3rd round.
Kent Hughes really looks like a genius in this trade. He simply cannot lose. Without taking anything away from Jordan Harris, whom I like, he will never become a great defenseman in the NHL, while even if Patrik Laine doesn't produce, the Canadiens will get a 2nd round pick.
And if Patrik Laine breaks out, it could be the steal of the year in the NHL. The kind of trade that would almost automatically give Kent Hughes the General Manager of the Year trophy.
