Indeed, the star forward and the Ducks both wish for a trade, but Pat Verbeek won't part with him for nothing.
Journalist Arpon Basu got to the heart of the matter and now knows what the Ducks have asked from the Canadiens as a base for the trade.
It's simple, Kent Hughes will have to give up either Kaiden Guhle or David Reinbacher, and even more. That's what is being asked as the foundation of the deal.
The Canadiens' GM has repeatedly stated that he won't sacrifice the future of the club to bring in a forward, so if Pat Verbeek doesn't change his stance, Zegras won't be coming to Montreal in the near future.
Guhle and Reinbacher are absolutely part of the Canadiens' top 4 on defense in the organization's future plans.
It would be quite contradictory to trade one of them after such statements.
However, Zegras is a very talented forward who has already had two seasons with over 60 points in the NHL. He could thrive with a change of scenery.
At just 23 years old, Zegras has already accumulated 154 points in 211 NHL games. He has two years left on his contract at $5.75 million, after which he will be a restricted free agent.
