Without dwelling too much on the importance of the Sean Monahan trade for the Canadiens' reconstruction, everyone agrees that it was a success.
According to DansLesCoulisses, the Habs will have approximately $17 million in cap space after signing Arber Xhekaj and Justin Barron and placing Carey Price's contract on long-term injured reserve.
Having $17 million in cap space is an asset that few teams possess currently. With the salary cap taking a break in recent years before increasing this season, the space under the salary cap has become even more valuable.
The 32-year-old forward is entering the sixth year of his $9.85 million contract. The former first-round pick of the Boston Bruins has still managed to score 25 goals and 52 points in 68 games with the Dallas Stars. Moreover, he has just had a good season despite seeing his ice time reduced. A trade like this could allow the Stars to facilitate contract extensions for their young stars like Thomas Harley this season and other young players like Logan Stankoven, Wyatt Johnston, and Jason Robertson over the next two years.
People are talking about Patrik Laine, but there are also other players like Jonathan Huberdeau, Tyler Seguin, and Alex Killorn who have painful contracts and could be a good short-term solution for Martin St-Louis' top 6.
I'm not saying one of these players will be traded tomorrow, but with Kent Hughes, we never know what's going to happen! So I'm curious to see what will happen with this top 6 forward file.

The Habs might have enough space under the cap for another trade like Sean Monahan.
