Terrible news for Patrick Roy and his Islanders: season over
The New York Islanders can't afford any more setbacks as they drift further away from a playoff spot. Unfortunately, bad news has struck again, this time affecting defenseman Scott Mayfield.
"The Islanders announced D Scott Mayfield had season-ending surgery.
Timeline calls for normal summer of training and full recovery in time for next season." - Frank Seravalli
Currently, Casseau's squad sits 4 points behind the Capitals and the 2nd Wild Card spot for the playoffs. They absolutely must start racking up wins now, and Mayfield's injury is a significant setback.
The short-term goal of bringing in Roy was to give the team the best chance at making the playoffs. If the Islanders fall short, it will be a bitter pill to swallow for everyone on Long Island.
It's worth mentioning that Lou Lamoriello didn't exactly help the team at the trade deadline by making no acquisitions. Despite this, I believe Patrick Roy is doing a tremendous job with the team, and they shouldn't count him out just yet.
I wouldn't be surprised to see them bounce back and ultimately secure a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
