Now that it's confirmed, and Michael Andlauer has been the owner since the beginning of the season, the rumors have only increased, and it felt like DJ Smith was on the hot seat.
Andlauer is a former partner of Geoff Molson and a shareholder in the Canadiens, in addition to being a big fan of Patrick Roy. So, his candidacy as the next head coach of the team made a lot of sense.
Even though Smith was fired, Jacques Martin took over the team on an interim basis, and again, the rumors were persistent about Roy. Many analysts believed he would accept the position this summer.
The fact is that Patrick never received an offer. It would have been a significant move for the team and the city, but the Sens waited too long, and the owner regrets it now.
That's how it goes in the hockey world. When a candidate of Patrick Roy's caliber is available, you have to seize the opportunity, especially with a coaching change in Ottawa.
Without taking anything away from Jacques Martin, he's not the one who will draw crowds to the Senators' games. Roy would have had that effect, which would have been beneficial for the owner.
