Connor Bedard is more than talented and charismatic; he is a role model despite his young age and will be a source of pride for the league for many years.
A source of pride until he goes against Gary Bettman. Indeed, a few months ago, the partnership between the NHL and Gatorade ended, forcing Bettman to find another partner, Biosteel.
This was considered one of the worst pieces of news in NHL partnership history, which is saying something.
The association with Biosteel didn't work out, and now Bodyarmor is the official partner of the NHL.
Returning to Bedard, he is following in the footsteps of his childhood idol, Sidney Crosby. He signed a deal with Gatorade, just like Crosby. The big difference is that Crosby did it when Gatorade hadn't yet abandoned the NHL.
Bettman must not be pleased to see that one of his stars, the player whose jersey was the best-seller in 2023-24, is now linked to an adversary.
I don't believe Bedard intended to do anything wrong, and I'm sure his intentions were good, but this shows once again how the commissioner no longer has the power he once had.
Teams and players are starting to do as they please, clearly fed up with outdated management.
