Return to Finland for former Canadiens player, Jesperi Kotkaniemi?
Shockwave, as the 3rd overall pick of the Canadiens in 2018, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, could quickly find himself back in Finland, his native country.
Indeed, the young man has not met expectations with the Hurricanes, and his $4.82 million per year contract until 2030 weighs heavily. He will be very difficult to trade.
If Don Waddell fails to trade him before he turns 26, he will have to make a decision. Players can be bought out at one-third of their value before this age.
"It's a point that could make a difference, as KK will turn 26 on July 6, 2026 exactly. So the Canes have two years to make their decision, and KK has the same amount of time to prove his worth."
Snake adds that if the Finn does not have more success in the next two seasons, it would be surprising for a team to sign him, even at a discount, to play on a fourth line.
"But the Snake also said that KK might make a stint in the AHL before considering Finland because he doesn't see another club giving him $2M/year to play on a fourth line."
So we hope Kotkaniemi finds his groove before this deadline, but at the same time, it's satisfying to see that the Canes made a hostile offer to get him and failed.
