During the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Xhekaj was involved in an incident when he darted Michael Bunting in a particularly sensitive area.
Note that the referee didn't see anything, and Xhekaj was not punished for this sequence.
The defender doesn't lack intensity or robustness, but his lack of discernment is starting to worry the management and coaches. Assistant coach Stéphane Robidas took the time to talk with him at length after the incident, probably reminding Xhekaj of the importance of controlling his emotions and actions.
Watch the sequence right here:
Although his physical presence is an undeniable asset, his impulsive decisions risk becoming a real handicap for the team, even if I am a huge fan of the character.
Within the Canadiens, questions are being asked about Xhekaj's future. He can't just be the physical guy. He will have to show maturity and be able to defend his teammates intelligently, not by instigating "dirty hits" like that.
The important thing here is not to distort him, but free hits like that are unacceptable!
If this kind of incident happens again, don't be surprised if Kent Hughes gets rid of him or at least gives him to Laval.
Xhekaj, 23, has not scored a single point in nine games with the CH since the start of the season.
