Kent Hughes was in front of the media on Monday morning to provide his mid-season assessment. Unsurprisingly, journalists quickly steered the conversation towards upcoming transactions, managing to extract some responses from the GM.

We are well aware that there are many (too many) quality defensemen in the team. Whether in Montreal or Laval, it's a problem. Some players, like Nicolas Beaudin in Laval, are asking for more playing time and seeking solutions.

There is also a lack of offense. Journalists asked Hughes about his plan to address this issue, and here is his response:

"GM Kent Hughes says they'll look at trading either young players that play positions the organization already have a lot of depth in or draft picks to acquire players that can help in other areas of need like they've done in the past with the likes of Dach & Newhook."

In other words, one or more defensemen will be traded to make a similar transaction that brought in Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook, or they will draft such a player.

Since the draft is not an exact science, the Canadiens are not expected to select in the top 5 this year in principle, and there will still be an excess of defensemen, we should therefore expect one or more major transactions.

At least we now have clarity on the game plan. Kent Hughes will improve the offense; it's just a matter of time.
