Plot twist coming up in Pittsburgh involving Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang, and Evgeni Malkin?
With the acquisition of Erik Karlsson and contract extensions offered to Kristopher Letang and Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins simply cannot afford to miss the playoffs.
Unfortunately for them, it's far from guaranteed, despite the captain having a very good season. Their participation is not even close to being assured, and the core is aging.
Indeed, the Penguins are currently the oldest team in the NHL on paper. Rumors are circulating about the possibility of trading one or more star players from the team, and Kyle Dubas has broken his silence on the matter.
"I have my expectations of the group now, and I have my responsibility in the long run when it comes to how we're going to dictate our course. I'm going to give the players and the coaching staff as much time as possible," Dubas said. "So I'm just by nature not going to make any decisions based on how we do this week or next week. When we get through the All-Star break, and on the other side of that, we'll have a better idea of what we are as a group and where we need to go. Do we need some help, or do we need to have a deeper discussion about where we're at as a club?"
- Kyle Dubas
This means that coming back from the NHL All-Star break, if the Penguins are not yet in a good position to make the playoffs, there could be some movement in Pittsburgh.
The stars of the team, except Karlsson, have won together, and the guys still want to win together. The ball is in their court, but if they are unable to produce and meet expectations, some of them could find themselves playing elsewhere.
