Important meeting for Jonathan Huberdeau in Montreal and it's significant
Since his trade from the Panthers to the Flames, Jonathan Huberdeau has not been himself.
In his first season in Calgary, Huberdeau played under Darryl Sutter, and it didn't work out. Even after the coaching change, things haven't improved much.
The Flames are willing to do whatever it takes to get him back on track because he has a very large contract for another seven years. With his current performance, he is not tradable and clearly not producing enough.
Jonathan has proven that he doesn't need Aleksander Barkov to produce, as he performed well even when the Finn was injured. Clearly, something is wrong.
A major visit to Montreal
His head coach, Ryan Huska, came to Montreal to meet with him in person and try to find solutions. Here's what he had to say:
«We looked at where we are now and where we want to go in the upcoming year. The coach and the player are working to be on the same page. We are here for the same reasons.»
«Sometimes, certain guys say about their coaches that they are too hard on them, that they don't care about them. As coaches, we want to put players in positions where they can succeed. Sometimes, having an unconventional conversation is a good way to break down that wall of silence.» - Ryan Huska
This is a very commendable initiative from Huska, who seems genuinely committed to getting Jonathan back on track. He wouldn't have made the trip to Montreal during his time off if he didn't believe in Jonathan, which is a good sign.
For the sake of both the player and the team, Huberdeau needs to bounce back. He is capable of it, and it's encouraging to see that his coach believes in him and is willing to go to great lengths to help him succeed.
