Almost all experts and fans of the Canadiens believe this was a great move by Kent Hughes, since the club's young star will be in Montreal long term, to the maximum limit allowed by the league.
However, a new detail has emerged that further proves how much the Canadiens' General Manager is indeed the right man for the good of this organization.
According to information reported by journalist Pierre LeBrun, Caufield's team was instead asking for a 5 or 6 year contract, targeting the opportunity to become an unrestricted free agent earlier, and able to break the bank at the age of 27 or 28.
In return, again according to LeBrun, Hughes never agreed to go below seven years, accepting as a compromise to reduce by one year the long-term agreement. For the General Manager of the Canadiens, it was out of the question to accept such an agreement for the franchise.
Thus, thanks to absolutely exceptional management, the Canadiens now have their two current stars signed for seven years and more in Caufield and Suzuki.
By holding firm in his negotiations, he never succumbed to demands that could have become catastrophic after five years for the club, and he now has a salary hierarchy for future contract extensions.
Kent Hughes has made a brilliant move that stands a very good chance of becoming highly profitable for the organization, at a time when the club will become competitive again, Caufield will be at the top of his game, and the salary cap will rise by several million.
