Kent Hughes' choice for the 5th pick seems very clear: his press conference demonstrated it
During the NHL Combine currently taking place in Buffalo, Kent Hughes gave a very interesting press conference regarding several hot topics related to the draft.
When asked about potential picks with the organization's 5th choice, the name Will Smith came up in the conversation and the reaction of the Canadiens' GM suggests that he might very well be the club's choice, obviously if he is still available at the time of their selection.
Remember that Hughes has coached the young man for several years, when he was a player agent. The fact that he texted his parents right after the interview really says a lot about the esteem he has for him.
It must be said that if Smith were to slide to the Canadiens' rank, the team would get their hands on an elite talent who will certainly play an offensive role for many years in Montreal.
In 60 matches this year, with the US program team, he has totaled 51 goals and 127 points. In comparison, the young star of the Devils, Jack Hughes, who was the first overall pick in 2019, ended his pre-draft season with a harvest of 34 goals and 112 points in 50 games.
He also finished the U18 World Championship with an impressive total of nine goals and 20 points in just seven matches.
