On the eve of the opening of the free agent market, an utterly unexpected piece of news has just surfaced via Sportsnet's insider Elliotte Friedman.
Here's what he mentioned in the last few hours about the Montreal Canadiens:
"Elliotte says that Montreal is one of the teams linked to free agent forward Ryan O'Reilly, which I find surprising." - HabsLinks
Wow! Let's just say we absolutely did not see this coming, especially since the Habs already have an abundance of forwards under contract for next season on their current roster.
According to Friedman, Kent Hughes has expressed interest to O'Reilly's agent, and he might offer him a contract in the coming hours.
I'm having a hard time understanding the purpose of this signing, especially since there is a potential surplus of center players with the likes of Nick Suzuki, Kirby Dach, Sean Monahan, Christian Dvorak, Jake Evans, etc.
But well, it will be interesting to follow this case at the opening of the market, which will take place today at noon.
32-year-old O'Reilly racked up a total of 11 points in 13 games this season with the Maple Leafs, while adding nine points in 11 playoff games.
