The Quebec forward, Alexis Lafrenière, has been at the heart of many discussions in recent weeks, as he is still without a contract for the upcoming season.

Many experts had notably mentioned the possibility that a team could try to acquire him through the trade market or even by making an offer sheet to the 21-year-old left winger.

However, despite countless speculations, neither scenario has materialized since the opening of the free-agent market.

Given that the Rangers only have $2.278 million available under the salary cap, several Montreal fans were hoping that Kent Hughes would complicate his counterpart's life by trying to get his hands on the overall first pick in the 2020 draft with a hostile offer close to $4 to $5 million.

To the great dismay of the fans of the Tricolore, the General Manager of the Canadiens did not dare to execute this strategy.

Moreover, new information has just surfaced concerning the future of the forward. Indeed, in an interview with TVA Sports, Alexis Lafrenière mentioned that there had been interesting developments in his contract negotiations, indicating that a new agreement should be concluded soon.

Yes, it's coming. My agent and the Rangers are in discussion, and I hope it will be settled in the next few weeks. I love playing there; it would be super cool to continue.

That's the National League. Sometimes you have to be patient; sometimes it takes a little more time. I'm really looking forward to re-signing. - Alexis Lafrenière

In light of this statement, everything seems to indicate that Alexis Lafrenière will indeed be back with the New York Rangers in 2023-2024.

The chances of seeing a general manager make an offer sheet are becoming less and less plausible as the Quebecer could finally sign a contract extension in the coming weeks.

At 21 years old, the forward from Saint-Eustache has had some difficulty establishing himself as a top-line attacker since his arrival in the NHL, having only amassed 91 points in 216 games.

However, there is no doubt that Lafrenière has immense potential, and the arrival of Peter Laviolette as head coach could offer him a greatly beneficial fresh start.
