Big surprise: The Senators place two quality prospects, including a first-round pick, on waivers
Decidedly, the general manager of the Ottawa Senators, Pierre Dorion, is not keen to offer an opportunity to his young prospects to make the lineup. Just a few days after losing the services of former first-round pick, Lassi Thomson, via waivers, the organization surprises once again.
Indeed, the Senators have admitted that they will submit the 23-year-old defenseman, Jacob Bernard-Docker, and forward Egor Sokolov to waivers at 2 PM this afternoon. We are talking here about a first-round pick in 2018 (Bernard-Docker) and a second-round pick in 2020 (Sokolov).
Wow! Quite a surprising announcement!
After losing a former 1st round pick in Lassi Thomson to waivers, the Senators will also place Jacob Bernard-Docker and Egor Sokolov there tomorrow. Two more high draft picks.
The first is an excellent defensive-minded defenseman who is very close to establishing himself in the NHL, in my opinion. He has almost nothing on the offensive level but is extremely solid in his zone. He will find a taker in my opinion.
The second has been a good scorer for several years, both at the junior level and in the American League. - Anthony Marcotte
According to many observers, it would not be surprising if the two players are claimed by another NHL team in the next few hours.
Bernard-Docker, selected 26th in 2018, is a mobile defenseman who excels in his own territory, having played 32 games with the Ottawa Senators. He notably represented the Canadian team at the Junior World Championship in 2020.
As for Egor Sokolov, a second-round pick of the organization, he was very dominant in the American League, reaching the 50-point plateau in his last two seasons. He was a key pillar in Belleville last year, collecting an impressive total of 21 goals and 38 assists (59 points) in 70 games.
Still looking for a right-handed defenseman who can play on the third pair (Mailloux? Lindstrom? Norlinder?), could Kent Hughes seize this opportunity to claim young Jacob Bernard-Docker?
One thing is certain, this will be a file to follow closely over the next few hours!
