Bob Hartley has just made a huge statement about David Reinbacher
The selection of David Reinbacher did not really garner unanimous support in Montreal. The majority of fans, ourselves included, were hoping to see the Canadiens make a splash by adding a future offensive star like Matvei Michkov.
The Canadiens' management ultimately opted for the Austrian defenseman, who was a safer choice, somewhat reminiscent of many of the organization's past selections.
While many fans believe that the Habs missed out on a home run with the Russian forward, others like Guy Boucher believe that the team has acquired a future blue-line general. Boucher, who is familiar with the Swiss league where Reinbacher played last season, believes that his performance was exceptional for an 18-year-old player.
Well, today we heard from another highly qualified individual commenting on the Canadiens' prospect. Just like Boucher, experienced head coach Bob Hartley also shared his opinion on the organization's new gem.
After personally consulting one of Reinbacher's coaches and drawing from his experience coaching in the Swiss National League in the past, Hartley painted a very exciting picture for CH fans.
"I know one of the coaches in Kloten, where David Reinbacher played, and he told me that he's a warrior. I've coached in the Swiss League, and if you're able to play in the Swiss League at 18, it means you're quite the hockey player! Auston Matthews played with Zurich in his draft year, but at 18, playing professionally as a forward is much easier than for a defenseman or a goalie. I was told that Reinbacher is a hard worker, a great person, eager to learn, with a good physique, a good shot, and good skills. So, it was an easy choice!"
- Bob Hartley Wow! It's undeniable that hearing from well-connected individuals in the field who have experience in the league where Reinbacher played, and who still have good connections with people who recently worked with him, is particularly encouraging for the young man's potential.
Although it's always a bit awkward to rely solely on statistical comparisons, it's worth noting that the Canadiens' 5th overall pick had almost three times better statistics than Roman Josi at the same age in the same league.
