Breaking: Former Canadien Alex Galchenyuk will have to serve a prison sentence
Only twelve days after signing a one-season deal with the Arizona Coyotes in early July, former Tricolore forward, Alex Galchenyuk, was arrested by Glendale police, prompting the organization to terminate his new contract.
The 29-year-old forward faced six charges, including threatening the police before trying to commit a hit and run. However, in the last few hours, journalist Katie Strang made a major statement, giving a rather disturbing update on the case.
Indeed, Alex Galchenyuk recently appeared in-front of a judge and received a 30-day prison sentence for pleading guilty to a threat offense. Fortunately for him, 27 days of this sentence could be suspended if the former third overall pick successfully completes an alcohol recovery program and abstains from drinking over the next twelve months.
Here are the details provided by The Athletic journalist, Katie Strang:
Update: According to official documents, five of the charges against Alex Galchenyuk have been dismissed; he pleaded guilty to a threat offense.
According to these documents, Galchenyuk was sentenced to 30 days in jail, one of which counts as a sentence served and 27 will be suspended after successfully completing an alcohol recovery program and 12 months without consuming/possessing alcohol.»
Last month, Galchenyuk publicly apologized and announced that he was enrolling in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program. - Katie Strang
We truly hope that Alex Galchenyuk will find the help he needs to get out of this rather worrying situation. Moreover, it's worth noting that after the incident, Galchy joined the player assistance program of the NHL and the NHL Players Association.
More details to follow.
