In a recent episode of insider Elliotte Friedman's podcast, he dropped a bombshell.
As the fifth overall pick in 2017 enters the final year of his current contract, he revealed that he might not be entirely interested in a long-term agreement with the Canucks.
What's worse, he also stated that his organization is uncertain about extending the 24-year-old Swede. Wow!
As unfortunate as this is for Canucks fans, it's incredibly intriguing for Canadiens fans who hope for the arrival of an impact player like Pettersson in Montreal.
After all, number 40 just crossed the legendary 100-point mark last year, amassing a total of 102 points, including 39 goals, in 80 games.
Pettersson is precisely the kind of player who could elevate the Canadiens to contender status with his addition to the current team lineup.
Assuming he becomes a restricted free agent in a few months, and the Canucks might be looking to trade him if he officially decides they won't offer him a spectacular contract soon, Kent Hughes absolutely needs to make calls to know the price.
With a large number of prospects in the pool and several draft picks in the coming years, the Canadiens could enter serious negotiations with their Vancouver counterpart. Moreover, Hughes would have the cap space needed to offer Pettersson a long-term contract.
