Indeed, as reported by Marc-Olivier Beaudoin on his Twitter account, by placing Carey Price on the long-term injury list, the Tricolore could have about 9 million dollars available under the salary cap for the next season.
Moreover, the general manager of the Canadiens, Kent Hughes, has already mentioned that he could possibly make a Sean Monahan-like trade to take advantage of the salary cap space to acquire a draft pick or even a young prospect.
Given that only the contracts of Jesse Ylönen, Nicolas Beaudin, and Lucas Condotta remain to be settled, it wouldn't be surprising if the Canadiens had several million dollars under the payroll when the 2023-2024 season kicks off.
Could Kent Hughes take advantage of this situation to acquire a whopping contract, in order to secure another first-round pick next summer? Several teams are currently in complicated financial situations, and many general managers will undoubtedly want to shed certain contracts.
Moreover, the CH has clearly demonstrated that it does not want to make a splash in the free agent market. The general manager could therefore use his leeway under the salary cap to acquire a player who could then be traded at the trade deadline.
This is a case to closely follow in the coming weeks!
