Exclusive: Jeff Petry reacts to his trade for the very first time
Less than 10 days after acquiring Jeff Petry, Kent Hughes has made another trade, sending the 35-year-old veteran to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Gustav Lidstrom and a conditional fourth-round pick.
During his press conference, the Montreal Canadiens' general manager confirmed that he had reached out to the defenseman to inform him that he would do everything in his power to trade him to the United States. Jeff Petry's wish has thus been granted, as he will now have the opportunity to play for his childhood team, the Detroit Red Wings.
Shortly after this wonderful news, the former number 26 of the Canadiens commented on the trade, stating that he was very happy to have the chance to play for his favorite team, being a native of Michigan. He specifically thanked the Canadiens' general manager for respecting his wish to stay in the United States.
"Kent asked me, without making any promises, where I would like to play. I appreciate that he did that, Detroit was at the top of my list.
To know that you're going to play for your childhood team, to be able to put on that jersey... It's a very special moment!" - Jeff Petry
"You grow up watching a team, you always play that situation out in your mind of you wearing that jersey. You keep thinking in your head, 'OK, when is that opportunity going to come? Can it come?'" he said Wednesday during his introductory presser.
"For me, I always thought about wanting to play one year here maybe at the end of my career, or whenever the opportunity came. To get that call yesterday was a very special moment for me."
Wow! Although this gesture may seem insignificant, word has surely gotten around in the NHL, and there's no doubt that Kent Hughes' classiness has earned him points with some players in the NHL.
After all, the Canadiens' general manager could probably have gotten a more interesting return for the defenseman, but he made sure to choose a destination that the Petry family had prioritized. One can't blame him for doing so.
We wish Jeff Petry the best of luck with his new team!
