During his recent press conference, he revealed that the plan was to start the season with Carey Price's contract on the team's roster, not on the long-term injured reserve (LTIR) list.
This way, the team could take advantage of several benefits by subsequently placing Price on LTIR during the season rather than in the offseason. This move could offer flexibility in the team's salary cap.
However, considering Hughes's statement, it becomes clear that from a mathematical standpoint, keeping Price's contract within the salary cap doesn't work at the moment. The Canadiens exceed the cap by over $3.77 million.
Nonetheless, the General Manager of the Habs isn't ignorant. He made this revelation publicly, fully aware of the situation, even as they currently exceed the league's allowed cap limit by several million dollars.
However, it was after this that he disclosed something very intriguing that caught our attention. Here it is:
This is quite interesting, especially as we learn that the Canadiens currently have something in the works in the trade market.
Naturally, given that the team currently has three goalies, nine defensemen, and 14 forwards on the regular roster, further movements can be expected soon.
Did his remarks imply a trade involving one of his veteran goalies?
It's quite possible. However, if he were to trade Casey DeSmith's $1.8 million contract, there would still be nearly $2 million left to be freed up to comply with the salary cap. This wouldn't be the same case for Jake Allen, whose annual impact is $3.85 million. Trading Allen would instantly resolve Hughes's problems.
This will be a very interesting situation to follow in the coming weeks.
