Gary Bettman is furious with the Montreal Canadiens
It has now been over a year since the NHL controversially decided to cancel any events or references to LGBTQ+ pride. This community is equally important and deserves representation in the world of hockey.
Many are expressing outrage over this situation, and the Montreal Canadiens felt the need to take action.
In a statement from Team Montreal, it is expressed, "The NHL's reactionary response to the intolerance of some of its players towards LGBTQ+ individuals sends a clear message not only to its fans but to everyone involved in hockey. It confirms that even in the largest professional hockey league, LGBTQ+ individuals are considered a distraction, and there is no need to work towards their inclusion."
It's unfortunate that this is seen as a distraction. Raising awareness is crucial. Despite Gary Bettman's rules, the Montreal Canadiens have decided to proceed with their Pride night.
"It's the annual Pride night at the Bell Centre. Monday's game will mark the eighth edition of the Canadiens' annual Pride night, presented in partnership with Scotiabank. Organizations and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community will be at the Bell Centre for an evening celebrating diversity and inclusion in hockey. Fans can bid on experiences and items through fierte.encanpro.ca, ranging from a pair of tickets to a Canadiens game including a meeting with Samuel Montembeault, to a wide range of Pride items signed by the 2023-2024 team, as well as sticks wrapped in the Pride Ribbon (added to the auction after warm-up).
Funds raised during the auction will be donated to You Can Play and GRIS-Montreal, two organizations advocating for diversity and inclusion in sports and society. For more information about the event, visit canadiens.com/fierte." - Montreal Canadiens Kudos to the organization for this wonderful gesture that will be appreciated by many, not just those directly impacted.
