Huge statement from Kent Hughes regarding Sean Monahan and his future with the Montreal Canadiens
For a while now, fans and analysts have been discussing whether Sean Monahan should be traded or extended with the Canadiens. The question is being raised, and there's no better way to get an answer than asking Kent Hughes directly.
TVA Sports posed the question to him directly after the GM meeting in Toronto. His response is quite interesting:
"It's a decision we don't need to make at the moment, but we're certainly aware that he's a very important player!"
- Kent Hughes, who definitely opens the door to a contract extension for Monahan in Montreal
Based on this statement, it cannot be said with certainty that Monahan will be extended in Montreal. However, when asked what he likes about this player, Kent Hughes gave some additional hints.
"Oh... It's very positive, not just what we see from him on the ice. He plays on the power play and penalty kill, five-on-five, always wins his faceoffs... and it's also his leadership."

Again, without explicitly stating that he wants Monahan to stay in Montreal, Kent Hughes implied that he has a lot of respect and admiration for the player, both on and off the ice. This aligns with the type of player that Kent Hughes appreciates having on his team.
We will better understand the GM's intentions at the trade deadline, but until then, it's reasonable to believe that the plan might be to offer him a contract extension.
