Is Kent Hughes about to pull off a Tomas Plekanec 2.0?
Whether we like it or not, by March 8, Sean Monahan will be at the center of trade rumors. The forward is highly attractive to NHL teams due to his salary and production.
It's still unclear whether Kent Hughes intends to offer him a contract extension or if he will trade him, but one thing is certain: the worst-case scenario would be losing him for nothing in the free-agent market this summer.
Certainly, the decision to trade him will be heavily influenced by the return offer.
Among the interested teams, there's the perennial rival of the Canadiens, the Toronto Maple Leafs. They are also reportedly interested in Adam Henrique and Alexander Wennberg.
If I understand correctly, the Leafs, who desperately need a good goalie and one or two decent defensemen while boasting a strong offense, are still in search of a forward.
In any case, the Canadiens would have the opportunity to do with Monahan what they did with Tomas Plekanec a few years ago: trade him to Toronto at the trade deadline and sign him during the summer.
