Kent Hughes took everyone by surprise by involving himself in the major transaction between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Jose Sharks. Indeed, in order for the Pens to acquire the Norris Trophy recipient, the Canadiens agreed to take on the contracts of Jeff Petry and Casey DeSmith.

Although the general manager of the Canadiens confirmed in his press conference that he wished to trade a goalie soon, the addition of Casey DeSmith was rather surprising given the depth of the organization in this position.

Moreover, many fans believed that the former Penguins goalie was only passing through Montreal, as was notably the case with Jeff Petry. However, Kent Hughes stated that he would consider all possible avenues concerning a future transaction involving one of his goalies, hinting that Jake Allen might be the next to go.

"Montreal seems to be open for business regarding its goalies, I've also been told.

The team still hasn't made a decision, would be listening carefully, and gives the impression of looking for the most beneficial path for them." - Anthony Martineau

In an interview with Marc Antoine Godin from Radio-Canada, the number 34 of the Habs made a very surprising statement. Even though his position is potentially at risk, Allen seems at peace with the organization's decision, even seeming excited about the potential internal competition between him, Samuel Montembeault, and Casey DeSmith at the next training camp.

"There are only 23 players in a lineup. It will be up to them to decide if they want to waste a spot on an extra goalie or not. But I think in the future, more and more goalies will play during the season, and not just two. It's the very nature of the position."

"I've never been in such a situation before, but at the same time, it will be fun competition and I'm looking forward to it." - Jake Allen

We are greatly surprised to see Jake Allen react in this way when this trade might force him to have played his last game in the Canadiens' uniform. However, it's very encouraging to see that he is ready to fight to keep his spot in Martin St. Louis's lineup.

One thing is certain, if Kent Hughes is unable to trade a goalie before the start of training camp, a heated battle is likely to emerge with the Canadiens. Moreover, Jake Allen is far from ready to give up his position, and it will surely be very interesting to witness such a battle between the three goalies of the Canadiens.
