It's no longer a surprise to anyone, but all indications are that Jeff Petry will soon be traded by the Canadiens' General Manager, Kent Hughes. Moreover, according to many experts, a transaction could occur before the start of training camp, as he evidently will not play another game in the Tricolore uniform.

One thing is for sure, we are all eager to see what return the CH can get by trading the 35-year-old veteran. While some believe his value is very limited on the trade market, other observers claim that the Canadiens' management could hit a home run by dealing the defenseman.

After all, Jeff Petry is an excellent offensive defenseman who will likely play a leading role on the power play, and who also has a very impressive skating ability. Knowing that the Tricolore could absorb a significant portion of his contract, there is no doubt that a team might be willing to pay a high price for a defenseman of his caliber with an annual salary of $2.34 million.

In this regard, Charles-Alexis Brisebois made a very interesting statement during his appearance on The Sick Podcast With Tony Marinaro, mentioning that Kent Hughes might possibly get a first-round pick in return for Jeff Petry.

Montreal can still retain 50% of his salary, which, in my opinion, could allow them to obtain a first-round pick. He's a defenseman with a lot of experience, so I expect a team to pay a high price for Jeff Petry, and I am convinced that there will be a lot of interest in a player like him. - Charles-Alexis Brisebois

Wow! Imagine if the Montreal Canadiens are able to acquire a first-round pick for having rid themselves of the contracts of Mike Hoffman and Rem Pitlick, it would surely be a monumental steal by Kent Hughes.

Personally, we would be surprised if the Tricolore received a first-round pick before the start of the season. However, if the management decided to wait until the trade deadline to trade him, and if the main interested party was able to contribute offensively, it would not be surprising to see a playoff-aspiring team pay a hefty price for his acquisition.

One thing is for sure, this will be a matter to watch closely over the next few weeks!
