Having three goaltenders in a 23-player lineup has an impact on the entire team. Managing the situation is not easy for everyone, and it eliminates the possibility of having an extra forward or defenseman.
Normal lineup:
-Two goaltenders
-12 forwards
-Six defensemen
This allows for three surplus players in case of a last-minute injury or a coach's discretionary change.
Surplus:
-One goaltender
-One forward
-One defenseman
The impact of having a third goaltender was evident on Sunday when Jordan Harris was uncertain. Kent Hughes recalled Gustav Lindstrom from Laval, and he had to waive Joel Armia to stay within the 23-player rule.
Teams typically like to have two extra defensemen in a 23-player lineup. For the Canadiens, it's less dramatic because the farm team plays in Laval, right nearby. However, during a long road trip, it becomes quite complicated.
As it happens, the Canadiens are embarking on a five-game, 11-day road trip starting Saturday. In case of an emergency recall, it becomes much more challenging. Teams usually prefer to have eight defensemen and 13 forwards traveling, as if injuries occur, there's always the option to play with seven defensemen and 11 forwards.
Will we finally have clarity on the goaltenders before Saturday? Given that there are three games in four nights in the West, in California on November 22, 24, and 25, let's say the timing would be very good for this matter to be resolved before the trip.
